Making-of
We love tap dance and rhythm
That is why we wanted to bring six of the most exciting tap dancers face to face with one of the most virtuous and spectacular drummers of our time, Jojo Mayer. The combination of eloquent footwork and intoxicating percussive improvisation of all featured artists will electrify the Volkshaus. It will be an evening of explosive rhythmic brilliance! Get ready for a rhythmic shock wave and an extraordinary moment in the tap- drum- and rhythm world.
Your MC of the evening will be Larry Woodley.
Rhythm Tap
The great masters of tap dance of the 1930s and 40s – Bill Robinson, the Nicholas Brothers, Charles “Honi” Coles, the Condos Brothers (to name but a few) immortalized this American percussive art form. Starting in the 1950s the interest in tap started to decline, and tap was neglected. It was not until the 1980s, when the late Gregory Hines reawakened tap. He infused it with new life and tap began to spread again. The young generation of amazing tap artists has taken tap to new levels. A tap shoe is an instrument with the metal taps on the shoe like a drumkit with tom-tom, cymbals, snare, hi-hat, and bass. This is not the time for balletic Broadway style of tap dancing. This is the time of Rhythm Tap.
Jojo Mayer about the project
I was asked to be part of «Rhythm Tap Live» this year, and as I currently do intensive research about the roots of my instrument, the drumset, it came at an extremely opportune time. The drumset and the American tradition of tap dance have the same origin: Vaudeville. Most of the important drummers of the earliest times of Jazz were also tap dancers. This proves that these two art forms have impacted each other from the very beginning. The collaboration with some of the world's most distinguished tap dancers of the new generation is not only the final link for me, it is an opportunity to start a new dialog between tap and drums in contemporary urban culture.
